Food Halls As Inspiration
Large in scale yet designed for maximum connection, food halls offer a spatial lesson in bringing a sense of presence and presentation into the dining space.
We find inspiration in many places and in many forms, but spaces that leverage the power of thoughtful design to create energy speak to us on a pretty direct and personal level. Case in point: Food Halls. Bustling with energy, built for communing, curated to deliver a five-senses indulgence, they are for experiencing as much as for eating and their aesthetic mimics that. Marble counters. Tiled walls. High-wattage, outsized lighting. An abundance of glass. Whether you’re at Harrod’s in London, Le Epicerie at Le Bon Marchê in Paris or any of the other establishments that carry on the food hall tradition around the world, the setup is reassuringly familiar. Yes the food, in all of its authentically prepared glory, is the undisputed star, but the way the surrounding elements pay tribute is a pretty special lesson in the power of purposeful, intentional design. And that’s something that translates to home kitchens, as well; after all, you don’t need a marketplace to create a food-centric gathering space.
Below are 11 installs of our light fixtures that honor the food hall. Some are in home kitchens, some illuminate restaurants, but all bring a sense of presence and presentation to the dining space.
