For a city of its size, Charleston far outpunches its weight in the sheer amount of visual stimulus on offer. Outside the walls of its renowned gardens and house museums, there is culture around every corner, right at street level, from vibrant public art to enchanting parks, and you don’t need a ticket or private showing to experience it. There are bold, large-scale murals from artist Shepard Fairey who was born and raised here, an extensive, manicured park envisioned by Frederick Law Olmstead in a similar manner to his most famous urban expanse, Central Park, and more, all within the greater Peninsula. And just beyond the borders of downtown, a former naval complex in the midst of a renaissance, technicolor swamps and bird sanctuaries that together make up this multi-layered wonderland.
