The Urban Electric Co. was founded with the specific intention of producing one-off, custom lighting fixtures for discerning architects and designers. We work with designers everyday to meet their desired custom needs — from minor tweaks such as changing trim details or altering scale/proportion to the more complex challenge of engineering a triple-tier hanging pendant.

There is always a great story to each unique custom commission, so we interviewed three different clients, each of whom came to us with varied needs for stairwell fixtures.

Carl D’Aquino & Francine Monaco of D’Aquino Monaco were commissioned to design the architecture and interiors for a contemporary shingle style waterfront home on New Jersey’s shore. The five bedroom home is organized around a central unifying three-story stair hall that balances a series of linked interior and exterior rooms. The designers chose to take our standard Chisholm Hall pendant and stack it to mirror the beacon-like quality of the structure’s central tower. When conceptualizing the tiered pendant, D’Aquino created a mock up of the design made to scale which allowed the fixture to be tweaked as needed to fit the space exactly. The color was a special custom color mix that was matched to complement the rest of the home. (Photography: Peter Murdock)

Benjamin Bradley of E&Co. Home was challenged to design a fixture for a home in the Hamptons that had a double height entry with a towering stone fireplace. The fireplace was long and linear which the designer felt called for a round fixture, be it a lantern or chandelier. Bradley had already specified our Altamont sconce for the wall up the stairwell, therefore stacking the hanging version was the natural complement. “From there, UECo took hold and the finished product is literally, exactly what the space needed! Exactly! I cannot imagine another fixture more applicable to the space,” said Bradley.

Adam Hunter of Adam Hunter, Inc. approached UECo to build a triple tier pendant for a project in Brentwood, CA. The space called for an opaque design that would properly light a two story space — allowing your eye to travel up the staircase. “My inspiration for this three tiered pendant came from a single pendant with metal holding each piece of glass together. I wanted as little metal as possible and UECo was up for the challenge. They were very collaborative, knowledgeable and their follow through is impeccable,” says Hunter speaking to the design process.
